Late Winter Get-a-way

We ventured down to St. Mary's Georgia between snowstorms in the Northeast and ice storms in the Southeast. Arrived at Crooked River State Park and enjoyed sun and 80 degrees for most of our weeks stay.

Austin and I spent a day on Cumberland Island. Revolutionary war hero General Nathanael Greene purchased land on Cumberland Island in 1783. His widow, Catherine Green, constructed a four-story tabby home that she named Dungeness. Today we got to see the ruins of this home.

As we continued our walk we came upon a cemetery with approx. 6  old graves of island settlers  We then followed the trails thru the dunes to the beach and saw 3 turkeys.

Miles and miles of pristine hard packed sand made for an enjoyable walk.  Lots of small shells but we were happiest to fine 2 large and 2 small conk shells, unbroken.  After being on the beach for a mile and a half we moved to an inland trail with crazy big branchy trees, palm trees and lots of Spanish moss.   Took a short trail from the Sea Camp Ranger Station and finally spotted one of the many wild horses that live on the island.  Figure we walked 4-5 miles this beautiful sunny warm day in Georgia.
