Swamp Buggy 2013

Collier County Florida's early development was highlighted by the emergence of strange looking vehicles with large tires and unusual names like Dirt Dobbler and Tumble Bug.  These buggies were necessary as there was no effective way to penetrate the vast bog mire of Collier County.

More and more hunters built swamp buggies and waited for the opening of hunting season. They were soon challenging each other to a buggy race,  The first races started to take place around 1943.

The event has continued to grow over the years and was even featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

Today, The Swamp Buggy races
are held on a figure eight style track of mud and water affectionately called the mile o' mud by fans.  It has been a long tradition to have two "sippy holes" within the track at a depth of over five feet.
