Gopher Tortoise

Found in the southeast, the gopher tortoise are on the Florida Endangered Species list.   Rigley and I were lucky to see the tortoise during one of our walks through the RV park.  He was a fairly big guy who lives behind one of the trailers.

The gopher tortoise is unique.  It is one of the few tortoises to actually makes large burrows.  The burrows they make provide homes for many animals such as snakes, mice, fox, rabbits, quail, armadillos, etc., the burrows provide homes to as many as 250 species.

The tortoises graze on vegetation and have chiseled looking front feet and elephant like hind legs.
