We entered our 13th state this afternoon. The roads we've traveled have been interesting and at times amusing.
Winterset, Iowa , a small town in the center of Madison County. How could we resist "The Bridges of Madison County"? There were originally 20 covered bridges but only 5 still remain. We visited 4 of them.
For most of this week we have seen thousands of acres of corn. For as far as the eye can see, corn and more corn.
It is looking like we will have a good crop this year but we have seen a lot of flooding.
On Thursday we crossed the Missouri River at Rulo, Nebraska. I took these pictures from the bridge. We had to detour through the Southeast corner of the state to get around the floods and to Kansas.
Had some wild storms over night but bright skies this morning and we were back on the road.
In Lebanon, KS we checked out the spot, the Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States A small plaque on the podium informs visitors that a government geographic survey in 1898(?) established this spot as the center of the continental U.S.
Down the road in Cawker was a quick stop at the worlds largest ball of Sisal Twine.
40' 3" in circumference and weighing in at 14,687 lbs.
With the cornfields seemingly behind us,, we now see plenty of wheat fields.
Today we crossed into Colorado and will begin the search "for purple mountains majesties"
