Golden Big Grain Rice, the forerunner to today's long grain rice was discovered and first grown here at Brookgreen Plantation in the 1840's. Today Brookgreen provides one of the finest exhibits of American Sculpture in the world.
Recently Austin and I along with our dear friends Diane and Bill Gallo visited Brookgreen. We walked through the many gardens and water features that are dotted with sculptures that represent more than 300 American sculptors. Seventy of Anna Huntingtons works are displayed here.
The walking program encompasses many acres. The Beyond the Garden Stroll is 2.7 miles of nature trails through the old rice plantation. There is also the Lowcountry Hike, the Inner Garden Walk, and the Zoo Adventure Strut. Now we know why the admission ticket is good for 7 days.
Brookgreen Gardens is at
Highway 17
