We have arrived in Oregon but not before a short stay in Idaho. Not much in the potato state but we did visit the Potato Museum in Blackfoot. I learned that the ugly black spot in the middle of a potato is not rot and you should just cut it out and enjoy the rest of the potato.
Took a drive through the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Not sure how to rate that place. It wasn't what we expected, thought it would be more like the
moon or maybe it was. Lots of ol
"Spatter Cones", miniature volcanoes formed when blobs of molten lava were lobbed into the air during the last gasp of an erruption sequence that ended about 2,100 years ago.
After the Craters of the Moon we continued our drive along the Sawtooth Scenic Route that followed the Salmon River. Very interesting variety of mountains.
On July 14th we crossed into our 18th state, Oregon. Today we stopped for a change of pace at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Very impressed with the visitors center. It housed a great small museum of fossils and also showed an area where a paleontologist was cleaning a fossil. Even more impressed with the fact that Rigley could walk the Blue Basin trail with us. It's the first Nat'l Park that we have been in that allowed dogs on the trails.
We have bedded down for the night but not before taking Rigley over to Mt. Bachelor in Bend, OR for a little cooling off in the snow.
